New Publication: Vivaldi Sonata in C for Violin & Harp

The latest addition to The David Watkins Collection
Sonata in C
Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)
for Violin (or Flute) & Harp with optional Cello part
Transcribed by David Watkins

Vivaldi was the most prolific of composers and very popular during his lifetime. J.S. Bach was fascinated by his energy and transcribed several of his compositions. Today we are captivated by his rhythmic vitality and descriptive creativity, most notably in his Four Seasons for violin and orchestra. I transcribed this beautiful Sonata from a Trio which was originally written for violin, lute and basso continuo. I found the Trio in 1961 when I was studying in Paris.

NEW EU Publications: Sightreading for Harp

Sightreading for Harp by Anna Dunwoodie & Lisa Williamson
Creighton's Collection are delighted to announce that we are now printing and distributing EU editions of these acclaimed Sightreading books which were originally published in New Zealand by Anna Dunwoodie & Lisa Williamson.

Sightreading for Harp Book One

A resource book designed for student harpists by two teachers to give beginning students practice in sightreading. These exercises are all original compositions, and can be easily taught or practiced on a daily basis. The 250 four and eight measure exercises are divided into four sections, progressing from very easy exercises to more advanced, with quarter notes being the shortest note. With a few exceptions, chords are not used. This book is suitable for lever and pedal harp, however there are frequent key signature changes from exercise to exercise. A must for every teacher to include in conditioning, and nurturing the young harpist! 50 pages. £15.00 + p&p click for further information

Sightreading for Harp Book Two

Book Two is approximately grades 3-5 progressively getting harder. The examples in this book have been written so lever harps have to set a lever (in about half of the examples) at the beginning and pedal harpist will have to change a pedal somewhere through it. We've achieved this by writing the accidental only in one octave and using it as a natural in the rest. By the end of the book they should be confidently playing in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 3/8 and 6/8, from 3 flats to 4 sharps, 3 note chords, all rhythms including all dotted notes and runs of 4 semiquavers and a wide range of dynamics, articulation and tempo marking. The first half of the exercises are only 8 bars long progressing to 16 bars for the last 25 or 30 examples! So there are 180 exercises in total! 97 pages. £20.00 + p&p click for further information

Sightreading for Harp Book Three - Lever Harp

Book Three contains exercises at approximately grades 6, 7 and 8 levels. Each book contains 90 exercises; these are based on the same material but altered to suit the different requirements of each instrument. The exercises demand technical skills as expected at this level such as etouffes, 4-fingered arpeggios, glissando, polyrhythms, pres de la table, xylophonics, harmonics, lever changes and slides and increasingly difficult pedal changes and pedal slides. The use of mixed meter, irregular beat divisions, and a wide range of tonality including bitonal, whole tonal, atonal and modal music gives variety to the exercises which increase in length throughout the book. As in the previous books, the lever and pedal pre-settings are indicated at the start of each exercise and there are explanatory notes for some of the technique. In an effort to move the music from the realm of an exercise into real music, some of the exercises have titles and become short programmatic pieces. 82 pages. £20.00 + p&p click for further information

IV. Games
V. Laments
VI. Dances

For further information visit Adlais on line

Published retail price £8.00

This Suite of six short and contrasted preludes can be performed consecutively or separately. These pieces can also be used as useful studies of medium difficulty. The score contains separate versions for Pedal Harp and Lever Harp as well as suggestions for division to enable performance by a Harp Ensemble.

I. The Rain Forest
This prelude evokes the continuous watery mist sparkling gently under the green canopy of the Rain Forest. Written to encourage a young harpist, the filagree nature of the harp writing looks complex but is in fact very easy to play and memorise.

II. Flights
These simple fragments, when linked together, imitate the flights of birds.

III. Bells
A short essay in sonority which captures the sound of pealing bells with all their attendant overtones.

IV. Games
A playful study with contrasting rhythms.

V. Laments
An ancient mode used to conjure up timeless feelings of sadness.

VI. Dances
Fragments of rhythms lead into a middle section which develops into a 'rumba' with ongoing rhythmic contrasts.

Total playing time 7 minutes approx.

New in stock: Big Book of Exercises for Harp

New in stock at Creighton's Collection

Big Book of Exercises for Harp
by Isabelle Frouvelle

This Big Book of Exercises is intended for harpists and harpers of all abilities, from their very first year of practice (to be used along with Play the Harp with Charlie the Kitten), up to year 6 and beyond.

All technical aspects of harp playing are covered in progressive chapters.

Teachers will find it useful to select exercises from several chapters at a time, according to their pupil`s progress and need.

This bilingual (French/English) Big Book of Exercises was designed to be a companion to harpists, be it at the very first stage of playing, moving on from Play the Harp with Charlie the Kitten, or at a more advanced level. It provides numerous exercises, clear and easy to memorize, which cover every technical aspect of harp playing, i.e. position, placing, focus on the thumbs, suppleness, pressure, evenness, jumps, chords, agility, strengthening, stamina, accuracy, rhythm, pedals, scales and arpeggios in all keys, visual and hearing instincts needed for improvisation, control of all registers...

Exercises are laid out in 24 thematic chapters, and sorted, in terms of difficulty. Almost every single chapter can be started at a beginner`s level, then put aside, and reintroduced later on when some progress has been made.

Teachers have the option to map out their technical guidance, picking out exercises here and there, according to what needs to be learned, reinforced, worked on as a preparation for an upcoming piece, or straightened out (e.g. a temporary weakness).

"I wrote this book after years of teaching and compiled afterthoughts, workshops and classes with the Masters. All exercises have been tested by numerous students, carefully processed, and improved many a time over the years... I hope you will enjoy playing with it." Isabelle Frouville

A Word From The Writers
The Horror! The Horror! began with a battered paperback passed between the two of us, and the opportunity to produce a show for one of London’s most exciting venues. The book was J. B. Priestley's magnificent Lost Empires, recommended to us by the writer of these songs Jeffrey Mayhew, and the venue was Wilton’s Music Hall, which had invited us to create a performance to take place in its nooks, crannies and hidden corridors while the main house underwent renovation. Having previously worked largely in the ‘Grand Guignol’ tradition of gruesome naturalist short plays, Priestley’s book and Wilton’s itself suggested a very different approach.
We started putting together the story of a music hall company gradually absorbed by dark invisible forces, and Jeffrey began to write the score. From the first draft of ‘Keep Your Hand on Your Penny’ that Jeff played for us, we were bowled over. It’s a song that could easily have fallen through time from those days before the Empires were lost, when great halls up and down the company played to packed crowds twice-nightly and the best of the bill-toppers were true household names. Jeff has an enviable knowledge of late 19th and early 20th century popular music, but it’s his ability to not only emulate the tone and the rhythms of that period, but to create wickedly clever, extremely naughty and irresistibly catchy new compositions which blend the traditional with the slyly arch that makes his score for The Horror! such a joy to listen to.
This score represents a brand new version of the show, subtitled The Final Curtain, with six new songs, revised lyrics for several of those that return, and a completely reconceived book. The production is travelling up to the Edinburgh Fringe this summer via a brief stop-off at Wilton’s, and it’s packed with superb numbers from start to finish. There are peppy up-tempo pieces, saucy rabble-rousers and tender ballads, unfolding the story of a tragic romance caught in the calcium glare of the footlights.
We hope you’ll enjoy them as much as we do.

by Athy

"Dedicated to the victims of the terrible tsunami that hit Japan in 2011, this piece represents first, the Japanese woman, secondly, the Japanese man, and thirdly, it's beloved people's resurrection, represented by their symbol of hope the crane...made in origami. This final, heavily rhythmic part invites us to both remember each life lost in this catastrophic event, and turn from that pain and toward the power of the art and music." Athy

All the tunes in this book have been recorded by Monika Stadler and are available as free downloads

During my many years teaching at international harp festivals and workshops I was very frequently asked if my music books were also suitable for the single action harp. As I was not always able to answer this in the affirmative, but being increasingly aware how many single action harp players live in German-speaking countries, I have tried to accommodate them in this present volume.

I was extremely delighted to play these compositions both on the concert and single action harps, to switch between them and to experience the difference in sound and playing technique. Maybe you, too, want to try this — in case you are fortunate enough to own both harps.

"Spirit of Harp" offers a wide variety of types of music with the unmistakable style of Monika Stadler.

The playing technique is ever evolving, and the music for the harp enriched beyond clichées. The inspiration derives from different moods, nature, meditation, Impressionism, Jazz and Tango.

You can play these compositions on a single action harp or a concert harp.
